Each child exists in a different network of family, culture, community and experiences that are central to their identity, wellbeing, learning and participation. Contemporary early childhood education is therefore more than teaching and caring; it demands that educators have an understanding of the social, economic, cultural and environmental factors that affect children's opportunities for success. Embracing diversity as a strength, not a challenge, helps educators to develop an equitable, culturally safe and inclusive environment where all children are valued, respected and empowered.
This digital portfolio is a professional resource for early childhood educators to support reflective, evidenced and family-centred practice. It investigates five contemporary contexts that impact on children and families: Economic, Social, Cultural and Diversity, Health and Wellbeing, and Crisis and Emergency. Each section includes critical analysis, practical strategies, community partnerships and educational resources to promote equity, inclusion and resilience. The portfolio takes a strengths-based, rights-based and culturally responsive approach, ensuring that all children have opportunities to belong, thrive and succeed.
